FAQs

.

  • Why does my cat need a professional groomer?

Regular grooming is not just about keeping your cat's fur looking neat; it's crucial for their overall health and well-being. Grooming helps prevent painful tangling and matting of fur, which, if left untreated, can lead to pelting—a condition where mats combine into one large mass.

Matting can cause severe discomfort as the mats pull on your cat's skin, restricting their movement and causing pain. This can lead to long-term skin and health issues. Mats can form around sensitive areas like the bottom, leading to hygiene problems when your cat uses the toilet.

During each grooming session, I thoroughly check your cat from head to tail, which gives me the opportunity to spot potential health issues that you might have missed. I ensure that their claws are healthy and properly trimmed, preventing painful ingrown claws that can dig into their paw pads.

Additionally, I check and clean their eyes and ears to ensure they’re feeling their best. Grooming is an important part of your cat’s overall care, and I’m here to help keep them happy and healthy.

  • How do I know if my cat needs a professional groom?

The biggest sign your cat needs a professional groom is thick, dense mats that feel like hard lumps against their skin.

Other indicators include a dull, greasy coat, thick spiky fur, dandruff, or discoloration, especially around the eyes and ears.

They may also struggle to keep their bottom area clean, leading to unpleasant odors.

If your cat seems anxious, stressed, lethargic, or unexpectedly lashes out, it could be due to discomfort from their coat.

  • How often will my cat need to be groomed?

Regular grooming is key to keeping your cat happy and mat-free.

Long or dense fur should be professionally groomed every 6-10 weeks, while short-haired cats can go 10-12 weeks between visits. You will still need to lightly groom your cat at home between their visits, if possible.

Frequent grooming makes each appointment quicker and more pleasant for your cat. It also helps reduce costs since there’s less need for drastic mat removal or full lion clips, keeping your cat's coat more natural.

  • How much does a groom cost?

Every cat is unique, and I’m happy to discuss their specific grooming needs during an initial appointment to give you an idea of costs. I can’t provide an accurate quote without meeting your cat in person, but I’ve included approximate costs on my website for reference.

  • I'm unable to groom my cat as they really dislike it, how will you be able to?

Every single cat I meet is different, so I have various ways how to approach cats with different temperaments. It may take multiple visits to build your cat’s trust.

I never use restraints and will never scruff your cat.

I prioritze making them comfortable by focusing on the problem areas, such as mat removal and sanitary trims.

If I feel the situation is too stressful or dangerous for your cat, I may refer you to your vet for either anti-anxiety medication (gabapentin) or for grooming under sedation.

  • My cat is in quite poor condition, will you refuse to help them?

My mantra is for all cats to be happy, healthy, and live with ease. My job is to help them achieve this, addressing any issues and working together to improve their well-being.

All I ask is that we create a plan to prevent future grooming issues, which typically involves regular appointments every 6-12 weeks and your commitment to their grooming routine.

The only time I will refuse to groom is if I believe their welfare (or my own) is at risk and they need veterinary intervention, or if I feel there isn’t a commitment to their long-term care.

  • Can I take my cat to a dog groomer?

Very few dog groomers offer cat grooming services because cats are not just small dogs—they have different fur types, skin, anatomy, body language, and temperaments.

Cat grooming is a specialized skill that requires specific techniques, patience, and a deep understanding of cats.

Cats are also highly sensitive to sights, sounds, and smells, especially the presence of other animals. Grooming in a dog-free environment helps reduce this stress, as I don’t carry dog smells on me or my equipment.

If you do take your cat to a dog grooming salon, please ensure they are specifically trained to groom cats and that no dogs will be present during the appointment.

  • Why do you charge an extra fee for matting?

If your cat is severely matted (tangled fur forming hard lumps against the skin), the mats will need to be removed with clippers. Cutting through thick mats can blunt the clipper blade, which then need to be replaced. Replacement blades cost between £40-£60 each, so an additional fee helps cover this cost.

Removing severe mats takes extra time and requires careful inspection and treatment of the skin underneath. Cats with severe mats may already be in pain and are often extremely sensitive to touch.
